## Effects of Environmental Conditions such as Humidity on the Long-Term Stability of CZT Crystals

Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) crystals are widely used as room-temperature semiconductor detectors, especially in gamma-ray and X-ray spectroscopy. While CZT offers many advantages like high atomic number, wide bandgap, and good charge transport properties, its long-term stability can be significantly influenced by environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and atmospheric contaminants. Among these, humidity plays a critical role in affecting the surface and bulk properties of CZT crystals, ultimately impacting device performance and reliability.

## Surface Oxidation and Chemical Degradation

Humidity introduces moisture (water vapor) into the environment surrounding the CZT crystal. The presence of water molecules on the CZT surface can lead to chemical reactions, particularly oxidation of the crystal surface or electrode materials.

* Oxide Formation: The cadmium and zinc elements on the CZT surface can react with oxygen and moisture to form oxides such as CdO and ZnO. These oxides alter the surface chemistry, creating layers with different electrical and mechanical properties.
* Surface Roughening: Oxidation can cause degradation of the surface morphology, increasing surface roughness. This can negatively affect the quality of electrical contacts and increase surface leakage currents.
* Electrode Corrosion: Humidity can also corrode metal contacts (e.g., gold, platinum, or indium), especially if protective passivation layers are incomplete or damaged. Corroded contacts lead to increased contact resistance, unstable electrical behavior, and device failure.

## Increased Surface Leakage Current

Moisture adsorbed on the CZT surface can act as a conductive path, increasing surface leakage currents in the detector. High leakage currents degrade signal-to-noise ratio and energy resolution by contributing to unwanted noise.

* Surface Conduction: Thin water layers or hygroscopic contamination layers can create a conductive film on the CZT surface, allowing current to flow even in the absence of radiation.
* Charge Trapping and Recombination: Moisture-induced surface states can trap charges, increase recombination rates, and reduce charge collection efficiency.

## Degradation of Passivation Layers and Encapsulation

To protect CZT crystals from environmental effects, passivation layers such as SiO₂, Si₃N₄, or organic coatings are applied. However, prolonged exposure to humidity can degrade or delaminate these layers.

* Moisture Penetration: Over time, water molecules may permeate the passivation layer, reaching the CZT surface or electrode interface, thereby initiating degradation.
* Mechanical Stress: Hydration and dehydration cycles induce mechanical stress due to swelling or contraction in passivation or encapsulant materials, potentially causing cracks or delamination.

## Impact on Bulk Crystal Properties

Although CZT is relatively stable in bulk, high humidity combined with temperature cycling can induce subtle changes:

* Hydrolysis Reactions: Prolonged moisture exposure can lead to hydrolysis reactions at defect sites or grain boundaries within polycrystalline CZT, which can modify trap density or introduce new defect states.
* Increased Defect Density: Moisture-assisted chemical reactions can promote formation of secondary phases or inclusions, increasing electrical non-uniformities and reducing carrier lifetime.

## Influence on Polarization and Electrical Stability

Humidity-related surface and interface degradation exacerbates polarization effects in CZT detectors under bias.

* Charge Accumulation: Surface states introduced or enhanced by moisture can trap charge carriers, increasing space charge buildup and accelerating polarization phenomena.
* Instability: This leads to temporal instability in the electric field distribution, degrading spectral performance during long-term operation.

## Mitigation Strategies

To enhance long-term stability against humidity:

* Hermetic Sealing: Encapsulation of CZT detectors in hermetic packages prevents moisture ingress.
* Robust Passivation: High-quality, dense, and moisture-resistant passivation layers are essential.
* Controlled Storage: Storing CZT crystals and devices in low-humidity environments reduces degradation risks.
* Surface Treatments: Chemical treatments or coatings that repel moisture can improve surface stability.

## Summary

Humidity adversely affects the long-term stability of CZT crystals primarily through surface oxidation, increased leakage currents, degradation of contacts and passivation layers, and enhanced polarization effects. These phenomena degrade electrical performance, charge collection efficiency, and spectral resolution. Careful material processing, packaging, and environmental control are necessary to mitigate the impact of humidity and ensure reliable, stable operation of CZT-based devices over extended periods.
